Bradley Whitford, known for his role in the iconic series The West Wing, is back in the White House, but this time, there's a twist. Whitford teams up with his former co-star, Allison Janney, as they portray a unique power couple in Season 3 of The Diplomat.
Janney takes on the role of Grace Penn, the newly appointed U.S. President, while Whitford plays her husband, Todd Penn. Their on-screen chemistry and shared history add a layer of depth to their characters, as Janney explains, "We have a lot of history baked into these roles, which creates a real comfortability between us."
But here's where it gets controversial... Todd, portrayed by Whitford, is an 'openly grumpy' husband, protective of his wife's newfound power. He's a complex character, and Whitford enjoys bringing his inner turmoil to life.
"Todd is a wonderful vessel for exploring male ego," Whitford says. "He's jealous, protective, and determined to save his wife, but he's not very good at it."
And this is the part most people miss... Todd's new role as the 'First Lady' puts a unique spin on traditional gender roles. In the season premiere, he cheekily introduces himself as the new First Lady, highlighting the uncomfortable position he finds himself in.
Showrunner Debora Cahn sheds light on Todd's dilemma: "He loves Grace and wants to support her, but the process is painfully devastating. He keeps it hidden, but it's there, right under the surface."
Keri Russell, who stars as Kate Wyler, agrees, "Todd wants to support Grace, but he's just not very good at it."
As the season progresses, we can expect to learn more about Todd's backstory and his relationship with his wife. Whitford teases, "We discuss Todd's past, and it will be revealed. He was once a biology professor, and now his career is on hold. He's navigating unanticipated sacrifices."
